[Understand] What is working for you?

Thanks to some of your advice, for the last 2 weeks I have really tried to ask the students HOW using the strategies help them to better understand their reading. I have gotten some interesting responses. I have asked this question during whole group read aloud, but I also started asking kids as I conferenced with them about their reading. I feel like only a small portion of my class can explain their thinking in this way. Quite a few students get a blank look on their faces, but it is interesting to begin a discussion about this with them and model for them how particular strategies help me understand. I hope to keep this small change in my teaching going and have it infiltrate our discussions even more...

Let's get some more discussion going...
What have you implemented from To Understand so far...how is it working for
you?
Are you taking ideas "as-is?" Are you adapting ideas?
Please share...baby steps are just fine! There is a lot to learn in To
Understand. What little (or big!) changes are you making and how are the
students
responding?
Let's talk about it!
